Group Therapy

(Includes Sibling Therapy)

Often Autistic children, those with ADHD, high anxiety, and other concerns struggle with participating in or even getting to group therapy activities.  Anxiety, sensory sensitivities, and the unknown can be barriers to the aims of the actual activity you would like your child to attend to support their growth in other areas.  Many times we enrol our children in group activities, only to see them struggle with attendance because they are afraid to enter, there are too many other children, the environment isn't suitable for them, or the activity doesn't meet their expectations.

We recognise these challenges and seek to offer an alternative to the usual group therapy offerings.  At BMPT we like children to form their own group after meeting casually with other children that attend the service.  They may meet in the waiting room or through a family event, education session, or know them in some other way.  The only requirement is that all children are current or former clients of BMPT.

The reasons for this include:

  • We are a small service and cannot cater for large numbers of clients.

  • Providing quality and comprehensive care for our clients is important to us rather than having a large number of clients.

  • It is ensures that our clients are able to access the positions they need.

  • It is necessary to know and understand the needs of each child in a group well, their personality and difficulties, in order to support them and the other children they participate with successfully.

  • Children are already familiar and comfortable in the environment, if they choose who they are comfortable in a group with, they can then relax and engage in the activities.

Play Therapy enables a variety of opportunities for children to work in groups and choice in what they do rather than set programs.  While Lego Based Therapy and Minecraft for Social Skills are available, children can also choose to participate in Digital Play Therapy, use Board Games, Lego and other materials depending on what they as a group decide.  The Play Therapist will support your children's goals and needs through whatever medium is chosen.
