The Therapeutic Powers of Play (TPoP)
It is recognised that the many existing therapies, be they play therapy or psychology, have common change agents. Using one model of therapy cannot meet the needs of all clients. Rather, understanding the underlying change mechanisms in different therapies, allows therapists to select the best approaches for each client and tailor therapy for their needs. In this way, the Therapist can provide an integrative rather than one size fits all approach.
The Therapeutic Powers of Play are the 20 core agents of change, or change mechanisms, that have been identified in play. Either the Therapist or child may use or draw from these as needed during sessions. Recognising which therapeutic power (change agent) a client is activating allows the Therapist to adjust appropriately.
